February is Heart Research Month, a time to emphasise the importance of heart health, early diagnosis, and ongoing investment in life-saving cardiac care. Recent developments at Mildura Base Hospital highlight how community support is helping to strengthen cardiac care for patients across the region.
With the support of the Mildura Base Public Hospital Foundation (MBPHF) and generous local donors, the hospital continues to expand its cardiac services and
invest in essential equipment to meet growing community needs.
Introducing the MBPH Cardiology Department
A recent milestone is the establishment of a Cardiology Department at Mildura Base Public Hospital. Currently operating as an in-hospital service, the Department
includes a cardiac ultrasound service and a heart failure service that supports patients admitted with heart failure through specialist assessment, monitoring and management during their hospital stay.
The dedicated team allows for more coordinated and timely care for patients with complex cardiac needs, supporting improved clinical decision-making and patient
outcomes. Plans are also underway to expand the service to include outpatient care in the next few months, further strengthening continuity of care for patients following discharge.
Supporting our youngest hearts
In addition to service expansion, Mildura Base Public Hospital has strengthened its cardiac diagnostic capability with the addition of a paediatric cardiac ultrasound probe used for echocardiography, generously donated by GJ Gardner Homes Mildura.
This specialised equipment allows our Paediatric clinicians to provide seamless, age-appropriate cardiac imaging for children and infants directly within the hospital.
Having access to accurate Paediatric echocardiography on site means:
● Faster diagnosis and decision-making
● Reduced need for repeat scans or alternative imaging
● Less stress for families and young patients
● Improved care in emergency and inpatient settings
In critical situations, timely echocardiographic assessment can directly influence treatment decisions, bed allocation, and length of stay, making this equipment
invaluable when every minute counts.
Most importantly, it ensures that the youngest and most vulnerable patients can receive high-quality cardiac care close to home, surrounded by their families and
support network.
Powered by community support
The establishment of the MBPH Cardiology Department and the donation of specialist Paediatric cardiac equipment highlights the powerful role of community
fundraising and corporate support in strengthening local health services.
Funds raised through the Mildura Base Public Hospital Foundation help ensure the hospital can continue to invest in essential services, equipment, and innovation,
supporting high-quality cardiac care for patients of all ages.
Help save lives this Heart Research Month
Heart Research Month serves as a timely reminder that continued investment in heart health and cardiac research is vital to improving patient outcomes now and
into the future. Community donations play a crucial role in enabling initiatives such as the MBPH Cardiology Department and the purchase of life-saving diagnostic
equipment.
This February, support heart health, support local care, and help Mildura continue to make a difference at the heart of community.
